Social Media Week 2010: New York City, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Toronto and São Paulo

It’s gonna be a busy week! Sunday night my remote got a work out watching the Pro Bowl and the Grammy Awards. This week my netbook and my phone will get a work out following all the folks participating in, and gathering tidbits of marketing wisdom generated by, over 70 events in just five days in the second annual Social Media Week.

Be in Six Places at Once
It is possible to be in six places – New York City, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Toronto and São Paulo – all at once, without ever leaving your desk.

Just follow @socialmediaweek (official tweets from all events) and #smw (the hashtag for everyone tweeting about the event worldwide) on Twitter. You can also become of a fan of Social Media Week on Facebook and click the Livestream tab to view video from the presentations and panel discussions.

Be Smart About Social Media and Marketing
The purpose of Social Media Week “is to advance the use and understanding of social media in the corporate, public and non-profit sectors”, declares the global SMW web site. So what can you learn from SMW? Plenty…

  • Engagement: See how Pepsi generates meaningful dialogue with its customers and helps improve communities in this Q&A with Pepsico’s Chief Consumer Engagement Officer, or see other live events featuring speakers from Pepsi throughout the week.
  • Search vs. Social: Social ‘nets have changed the way customers find companies – they may ask for a recommendation on Twitter or Facebook, instead of going to Google. It’s good business to know what’s being said about your brand in the social mediasphere and how to respond appropriately.
  • Geo-Social Applications: While you may be familiar with location-based applications like FourSquare, others like Gowalla, Yelp, Loopt are poised to be the next big thing in social media.
