Ten Design-Related Trends That Should Die in 2011

Posted by:

happyNewYear

Yes, it’s that time of year again: the time for a cliché phrase like “it’s that time of year again.” Out with the old, in with the new. And, while we’re on the topic of getting rid of the old, let’s discuss ten design-related trends that I think should die in 2011. If you have your own opinions about trends that should disappear in 2011, please leave a comment. Now, to ...

A Neutral Net Neutrality Solution

Posted by:

scales2_smlIf you have a controversial issue that needs a solution, you either have to come to some sort of compromise to get anything done, or convince enough folks on the other side that you’re position is the right one. Compromise is hard, especially when the two sides are far apart. This is not to say that compromise is always the answer. Objective truth does exist (if someone tries to ...

Will 2011 bring the end of all-you-can-eat?

Posted by:

buffetGenerally, no business likes to sell a product or service to someone for below their cost. There are exceptions. Retailers will use loss-leaders to get customers in the store. The hope is that most who are drawn in for the loss-leader will buy more than that one product, leading to an overall profitable transaction.  Similarly, restaurants advertise all-you-can-eat buffets to bring in guests with big eyes and small stomachs, ...

Are phone books a thing of the past?

Posted by:

phone-bookWhen’s the last time you used a phone book?

I mean really used it for it’s intended purpose of finding a phone number – not the last time you used it as a doorstop, kindling or a booster seat.

(And boy, do I have some fond memories of stacking up the metro Atlanta A-M and N-Z directories so I could reach the table for a holiday meal at Grandma’s house back ...

Technology and the new battlefield

Posted by:

Pearl Harbor Memorial_smlToday marks the 69th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  In addition to taking a moment to remember those soldiers who lost their lives on that “infamous” day, I was thinking about how technology has changed over that time, as well as the threats we face today and our responses to them.

By 1941 technology had been moving at a breakneck pace, and as is ...

Sometimes Over the Top isn’t Enough

Posted by:

googletv

It seems there are diametrically opposed opinions about “Over the Top” (OTT) Video and the effect it’s having on the broadcast  industry.  Some are adamant that OTT video is already having a major impact. They point to stats that show cable companies have lost subscribers the last two quarters, which they say is a clear indication of consumers cutting the cord in favor of watching free TV over their broadband connection.  ...

Net Neutrality Remains a Non-issue

Posted by:

net_neutral_smlIt’s been a week since the midterm elections, and a lot has been written about the future of Net Neutrality now that Republicans have regained control of the House of Representatives.  I’m happy to report, however, that the future of Net Neutrality is now.  That’s right, we have a “net neutral” Internet.  There’s no reason to panic–no reason to lament the loss of an open Internet or to worry whether ...

Businesses Abhor Uncertainty

Posted by:

vortex_smlYou’ve no doubt heard the idiom “nature abhors a vacuum”. The idea is that an empty space is not a natural state of affairs, so nature likes to fill in that void.  In the business world, information is necessary to make good decisions, and a lack of information makes businesses very uneasy. Put another way, if there is one thing that is certain about a business, it’s that it abhors ...

Thoughts on a Successful SCTE Cable-Tec Expo

Posted by:

We’re back from the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, which was held last week in New Orleans. The weather was certainly better this year. Heavy snow in Denver last year presented some transportation challenges and likely kept attendance down. I’m sure the economy didn’t help, either.

This year in The Big Easy it seemed much more active and upbeat. We had excellent attendance in our booth, and a lot of excitement over our TruVizion software. Of course, it ...
