DOCSIS Provisioning Adapter
Cable operators know that fiber is the future of broadband. Many are deploying fiber to the home in greenfield locations, and some are selectively overbuilding certain locations with fiber. However, they also have a substantial investment in their HFC infrastructure, so a complete migration to fiber will be a long process.
One of the investments operators have is in their DOCSIS provisioning system. There is a significant technical challenge and cost in deploying and maintaining a separate provisioning architecture for Fiber in addition to the existing DOCSIS provisioning system.
With ZCorum’s DOCSIS Provisioning Adapter (DPA), you can deploy Nokia fiber without the need to set up and maintain a separate fiber provisioning system. DPA sits between Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller and the existing DOCSIS provisioning system. Your staff will use your existing OSS/BSS to provision customer premises equipment as you normally would. DPA treats the ONT as if it were a cable modem. It communicates with the DOCSIS provisioning system and then sends the required data to Altiplano. Altiplano then communicates with the OLT, which manages the ONTs.
DPA allows you to speed fiber deployments by avoiding a forklift migration of your provisioning system. You can also eliminate any dependency on an OSS/BSS department budget or timeline, and instead focus on getting fiber infrastructure deployed and field techs trained. With DPA, CSR and Accounting functions remain the same. You also eliminate the capital and operational expenses that would be associated with maintaining two separate provisioning systems, and can apply those cost savings toward actual fiber deployment so more of your subscribers will receive the benefits of a FTTH connection.
